Do you want to see something really scary?
Remember that line from Twilight Zone: The Movie? I was reading blogs and news items on the net today and came across this video: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/02/palins-church-may-have-sh_n_123205.html
It is beyond my comprehension that this woman has been nominated to fill McCain’s shoes if he drops dead in the next 4 years. The Republicans are screaming the media is left wing, the Democrats are screaming it is right wing…but the reality is that a world power, to have this type of person represent it…wow.
This does affect Canada and the rest of the world. This woman exemplifies smoke and mirrors politics at its best. The media obsessed on her daughter’s pregnancy…this is not the obsession it should have.
The woman has a bachelor’s degree, has never traveled, and is declaring that she answers not to her family, herself, or even to her job as governor of Alaska…but to jesus. This frightens me…the turn to fundamentalism of any time is a turn back to pre-modern times.
Prior to coming back to Montreal to study, I lived in Texas for a few months, I was married to someone there. And the local culture was… baffling.
Critical thinking was a non-issue. The urge to consume was everything and no value was ever discussed. Being an animatist, I was asked by my wife never to discuss religion, or the differences between Québec and Texas.
But everybody was into how Jesus was saving them, even though many of her friends and relatives were using drugs (not pot, people, more like crystal meth) or in an adulterous relationship. No matter what you did, as long as you ask Jesus to save you, it was fine. I wouldn’t even dream of even trying to tell them the Bible wasn’t handed directly by God but was decided upon by committee, a simple historical fact.
I’m proud to support the separation of state from religion. I don’t believe religion is a good basis for morals, be it the “ten commandments” or the eight “I really rather you didn’t” (See Flying Spaghetti Monster, you’ll get it)
My analogy is this one: two types of hardcore zealous people are arguing against each other, blindfolded, from the same side of the fence!
Do I sound like a strong reactionnary? Maybe. Heck, this is a blog, not a conversation. I’m more than open to criticism, any correction or reply. Let’s.
I think what I’d love to see discussed in the media is a re-invention of federalism in the USA, because by now it is obvious that different people want different things, the balance between the State and the states ought to be revisited and, well, maybe it would convince some that a Constitution is not a document that has to endure the test of time unchanged, for tradition’s sake. If the country has to split because of ideological differences, then so be it. I’ve seen couples break up for less, after all, and nations come and go. Same thing with religions.
When my mom was a child, she lived in Greece for 6 years of her life. In those days, Greek individuals greatly valued religion and all it had to offer. Everything that happened came from God or any other religious figure. Individuals went through their days praying for things they wished would happen to them; whether it be for profit, health, or even the crucial decisions they had to make. They believed that Jesus was their saviour and that no matter how bad the situation may have been, he would be there ready to offer them his forgiveness and his safety. I strongly agree with Mathieu when he states that “[he] doesn’t believe religion is a good basis for morals.” Religion cannot define what is wrong from right or help people make the best possible decisions. Yes, believing in a higher power is crucial to all mankind but completely trusting it to deal with real issues like those in politics is just ridiculous in my eyes. So relating back to Palin’s video when she talks about the union of people and companies to build the gas line, she states that it is in God’s hands. She relies on God to make her political wishes come true and encourages the rest of the US population to do the same through prayer. It is almost as if she puts critical thinking aside and puts everything in the hands of God. In my opinion, it is outrageous and flat out scary to think that this human being may someday be in control of an entire nation whose ways and decisions affect Canada as well.
I agree with both previous comments, which state that religion not a good basis for morals. Religious belief is a personal choice that cannot be forced upon others. I do not believe that religion is going to guide Palin to make the right ethical choices needed for her position. I also to not believe that praying for $30 billion for the national gas pipeline project will make it appear. Palin’s belief in God may give her faith but will not give her the solution to moral issues that will necessarily benefit the people she is making choices for. Not all American citizens will share the same beliefs as Palin and will not necessarily agree with the way she is choosing to make decisions.
The choice of Palin for VP is nothing more than a political move. The Republicans needed a method of containing the Democrats, whom were vehemently campaigning that by voting for the Democratic party “change” would follow. This is a sentiment that the American people related to. Given how McCain is ultimately running in the Republican party, the same party that brought us Bush and his subsequent approval rating, by pushing forward the notion of ‘change’ the Democrats felt comfortable that the voters would swing their way.
Fast forward to today, where the Democrats elected to name Biden for the VP position; an old white, long-term politically inclined male. Meanwhile, the Republican party comes out of left field with the nomination of Palin. Now not only does the Democratic party no longer have the same hold on their favorite campaign speech, it has become in many ways invalidated. This is what the Republicans counted on when they elected Palin, not her intrinsic political savvy. It’s important to understand this difference: Palin was named VP not because of her political know-how but rather because she was a young, aspiring female.
This will draw in countless ex-Clinton supporters and allow the Republicans to finally have a response to the long-winded rhetoric that the Democrats had been using since the beginning of the campaign.
A final aspect that needs to be addressed concerning Palin is her religious inclination and the potential influence she would have if McCain became elected. An important aspect of the VP position that is overlooked is that the position itself holds little power; the president himself sets the limitations of the job. John Adams once said (in reference to the VP position): “I can think of no greater waste to the tax payers dollars.” in more recent history, Bill Clinton is said to have slept very little during his presidency, he chose to handle the majority of any issues that regarded his cabinet by himself. The opposite is true with Bush who is notorious for allowing his cabinet to do all of the work. While it is impossible to know whether or not McCain would allow for Palin to have any influence, it is almost certain that (has previously mentioned) Palin is only being used has a pawn in the party. In many ways, because of this, I can’t help but feel that Palin’s religious outcries are meaningless. Regardless of her zealot cries, she’s nevertheless a step up from Bush in that regard (and he actually does have power). What I take from her frightening religious outcry is that the party decided that she should be voicing her fundamental Christian beliefs because, politically, this will draw votes. That aspect is what I find to be the most concerning: that church and state are so intertwined within the United States that her video will likely draw votes rather than make them run far away.
I am a bit shocked by the Video of Palin’s speech. Although it is important to judge it within the context of a church gathering/celebration, I still think that it conveys her general values and reasoning. I agree with the comments above that mention that religion does not always lead you to the best ethical, moral or political decisions. Spirituality is important and it is a definite source of comfort; however, to say that faith in God help will bring about the making of the $30billion pipeline seems to be a political manipulation of that comfort. It almost seems like a way of avoiding some of the responsibility when you put such issues in God’s hands. It is shocking to think she could sway certain religious voters in the US simply because they find comfort in her faith. I hope that people find more comfort in Obama’s reason and intelligence.
I’m not one to follow politics in America or in Canada..but this video clip got me really angry. VP Palin was asked to speak to the graduating class, but all she does is ramble on about God and her personal beliefs. I found that this video was an attempt at trying to get votes and trying to emphasize the catholic church. As well as how God is behind every decsion and war. I understand that shes a Christian and all but considering shes a governer and running or is a VP, she just be more considerate and careful of her choice of words. She has to realize that not everyone in America is a Catholic Christian. If i were and American just from this video I wouldnt want to vote or be involved with this woman. From this speech I feel as if all she cares about is her church and her religion. She as a figure of power and authority should realize that America is a diverse country and there are numerous religions and opinions. She mentions that God is behind war..firstly who is she to to say what Gods behind, and that may anger people. For example, people who lost love ones over war..
Honestly I feel this video is a poor attemp at gathering votes and encouraging Americas youth to go joing the Army because its what God would want..Good luck Palin.
We are fortunate to have the media made available to inform and to entertain us freely. Although, unlimited information is published, people should still be selective to let pertinent news in and to avoid garbage fill their minds. Inevitably, the Americans will have to make their own judgements and make critical decisions before the elections. After all, the power is in the hands of the people.
Full media attention is on the Governor Palin’s daughter, who committed fornication, not to denounce the VP candidate as an unfaithful Christian or as a careless mother—it’s business. Whatever sells will slip into the newspapers. Evidently, the potential pitfall of the American nation would be their excessive attention to the media which feed their local brain cells with superficial critics. However, this information provided by the widespread media shows that Sarah Palin lacks attention to her loved ones. This information will be pertinent for decision-making if the citizens think critically. For instance, we can assume that if she becomes the Vice President she may ignore the voices of people and typically follow her own agenda.
Americans should also consider her lack of foreign relations and basically her pretentious conservative beliefs that are skeptical. Hence, if Palin gets elected and empowered then Canada will have to make adjustments so that Alaska won’t cease the trade of their natural gas. In the future headline, “Canada’s Banning of Gay Marriage before the Cutting of the Gas Pipelines”.
If it wasn’t so ironical to write this, I would probably open with a good OMG… I mean the way she is talking, right now the US is in an almighty holy crusade in Irak and God is happy about what is happening. It is kind of frightening to think that someone like her got elected as governor in the first place. I mean, this year when I was working in the west, I lived with families that believed in creationism and that placed a big accent on religion, but I don’t think they would have ever tried to mix politics with church. There needs to be a boundary between the “law of man” and the “law of whatever you believe in”, it should not be so close, as was proved numerous times in history… Somehow the whole election machine tends to disgust me. Take for example the way not only the republican party chose her as potential VP to e able to shut the democrats, but the general way it tends to work. How can it be possible to advertise for your party by stepping on your adversary? In a real good political campaign, I think they should not say that the other is worst than them, but that they are actually better! The same thing happens in Canadian elections and it makes me mad. I remember a Conservative party add from one of the previous federal elections saying how Paul Martin was a bad Canadian, having his boat anchored in the States and something like that… I mean it’s ridiculous, why would a simple fact like where is the guy’s boat anchored change his ability to rule a nation? And most important of all, how is dissing you’re opponent supposed to make you a better leader? The same thing is true for the US if not to an even greater range since there are only two parties. What’s up with that? Since when are only 2 possibilities gonna give you the actual right choice? The lesser of two evil? isn’t sad to think that way? Shouldn’t we be able to vote for what we actually believe?
I think the whole election process should be revised, because if it isn’t it will never actually represent entirely the beliefs and the ideas of the population
As I’ve stated in the previous blog, i have dual citizenship and grew up in the U.S. This will be the first election that I will be able to vote in. I’m feeling rather torn at the moment. I really disagree with Palin’s views. It is stated in the declaration of independence that there must be a “separation of Church and State” yet here we are with a woman crazy with God this, and God that. I disliked Bush because he was the same way. So I’m positive I don’t want McCain, since it’s a package deal (and at his age…who knows if Palin will become the President). Then again, with Obama and his campaign based on Change…then his VP? He doesn’t seem like one who will support Obama in change. the whole thing is just a mess for me. I am really starting to wonder if either of the candidates are people who I would want running the country. It’s actually come to a point for me that I believe that these candidates won’t be able to get us out of the war (which is what I truly want since my cousin is in Iraq). Do I even want to vote? What most Canadian’s don’t understand about the American voting process is that we are not actually voting for Obama or McCain, we are sending in votes to the representatives in the electoral college, who will then represent the majority of votes in your state and vote for us. we Don’t actually even vote for a person, we vote for a party. But I’ve noticed the parties getting similar, neither one doing very much. Does Canada want either of these candidates coming to power in their neighboring country?
In response the previous blog, “Does Canada want either of these candidates coming to power
in their neighboring country?”. I do not envy your position as an American voter, what so ever. I personally think that Obama has to be elected, if the US wants to see any change what so ever in their country. I don’t think the country could survive another four years of a conservative regime. With that in mind, I find it disgusting how the presedential election has become a popularity contest. It is no longer what does this politician stand for? How can they help my country? Will they be able to provide the change that this country needs? No now it’s, what designer are they wearing? Has their hair style changed? And the most important question seems to be lately, what celebrities are attending their speeches? The US election has come down to whether you want to vote for Oprah or some conservative country singer. On TV we’re shown not what Obama is giving a speech about, no we’re shown Oprah in tears at the end of it, that’s the important part! I think it’s all a complete circus, in which politics have taken a back seat to fashion, celebrities, sex scandles and pregnant 17 year old daughters.
One thing I wanted to add is that I think we need to, as human beings, across the globe, operate a paradigm shift by asking the following question. The answer matters little, I think, because it does come down to personal choice, but to know that it has been asked to everyone: What is faith, and why is it considered good?
I have read comments about it being natural, or normal to believe in something bigger, or above us. Is this an assumption, or a universal truth? Do, by definition, people who have no faith have to be considered as “evil” or at the very least “wrong”? Was Niezsche just a crazy old man?
I have mixed feelings about the election. With the undercurrent of economic crisis brewing right now, the overstretched military and religious flag-waving (In Jesus Camp, they actually swear allegiance to the Christian Flag. It’s free on Youtube) I’m thinking we might be lucky enough to see a loosening of the world hegemonic order. Sure, more troubled times ahead, but this means we might have more opportunities to make a difference.
Reading the article and watching the video of Sarah Palin just reaffirmed the fact that John McCain has no idea what he is doing. How could McCain and Palin possibly be able to govern arguably the most powerful country in the world?? When McCain picked Palin, to get the women’s vote, did he not think that they would see right through her? Does he believe that women are so unintelligent? The fact that she said the war in Iraq is “a task from God” scares me to death! It makes me cringe to think that these two might run the United States with that philosophy. I completely agree with Shirley that the media should not be focusing on her daughter’s pregnancy; they should be focusing on the real issues. If she is to be VP, the population should know exactly who she is and what she stands for! Leave it up to the media to focus all their attention on unimportant facts… I hope not only for the American people but for the rest of the world that these two do not get elected… it’s time for some major change in the US and I sincerely hope that our neighbors down south realize this! Or else we’re all in for a rough ride the next four years…
Faith is one of the most personal topics out there, to bring it to the world stage is a recipe for disaster. Faith can be a good thing, giving hope to people who have lost all, or to give a purpose. However the negative aspects are so great, abuse of people, of power. You can get people to do the craziest things when you attach God to them. This is especially scary if the person in question is the leader of a country… can you imagine if the leader wanted to serve their own religious agenda…(I also know that religion or spirituality is not all bad, that it helps people in their hour of need but their must be a dialogue between the different faiths for it to ever work. Or else we will just stay at this impass of not knowing where religion belongs and waging wars to “prove” which one is right.) And say Palin got to power, how would she reconcile her views to the population’s. Not every American is Christian…
What has frustrated me most about McCain nominating Palin as his running mate, is the fact that he has essentially completely contradicted himself as far as the importance that experience has on being in the white house.
This is a point that was brought up on the Daily Show at the end of August. Ever since Obama was nominated by the Democratic party, McCain’s entire campaign has been focused on the fact that he is not experienced enough to lead the country. McCain’s been in battle, he’s been there, he knows what it’s like to lead, etc., etc. However, by choosing Palin as his running mate, McCain is essentially picking the most un-qualified and in-experienced partner he could have possibly found in the republican party. She’s been running things in Alaska as long as Obama has been on the campaign trail.
If American’s are half as smart as i give them credit for (which is not very much to begin with), this McCain’s temporary media buzz of a candidate will be seen right through, and we will actually have something to not cringe about for the next 4 years.
I am glad that someone is still optimistic about United States politics. As most people have already mentioned, and as some pointed out, the election process has become a media circus. First they were asking us is America more racist or sexist, and now that we answered that question, we need to create more drama. Not only is choosing Palin a complete contradiction to McCains platform, about how Obama is to inexperienced, it also just reinforces the importance the media has on the campaign. The media has played a role in this election that it has never played before. It has created celebrities out of the candidates. Instead of focussing on their political platforms we are more concerned with which pantsuit Hillary chose to wear. This is because most undecided voters, do not care so much anymore about politics. So, the media is trying to grab their attention anyway they can, and the candidates are following suit. Not only does this tactic remove the politics from the election campaign, it makes people forget about existing politics. We do not hear to much anymore about what Bush is doing in his last few months in office. There was a joke on theonion.com, about how the market for anti-bush merchandise is going to collapse.
In my opinion, this is not going to hurt McCain but help him. This whole media ploy has done nothing but help the republican party. From the beginning of the campaign I have been saying that the United States is still to traditional to vote for anyone other then a white male candidate. At a time, I could have been convinced Obama will win, but now I am certain there is not a chance. Now anyone who is undecided, can feel comfortable and progressive at the same time when voting for the republicans. This was a strategic media ploy by the McCain people to capture the hearts of the undecided voters, and I personally think they will prevail.
I believe the most appropriate quote I have heard yet has been from Steven Colbert: “Who the f**k is Sara Palin?” He certainly did not know and nor did I. So I did a little bit of research. First we need to be clear that what is in the media can be very distorted from actual fact. The media tends to turn into the tabloids whenever it is election time so we need to be careful and critical of what we read. On the other hand, the media is telling us that Sara Palin is nothing but an evangelist and a liar who’s goals are very much not what she says.
I beleive this to an extent. From what I have read, she has done several things to make her bad in my books: she certainly does not seperate church and state when she asked everyone in a congregation to pray for a new 80 billion $ oil pipe line through the sate of Ohio and her Bridge to Nowhere project which she says Alaska can “build it ourselves”, without the help of congress, I found it funny that after having said that 10 times, the project is mostly being funded by federal reserves. I find her lack of integrity disturbing.
The real question is: what can we do? Its nice to say that we should be worried about the “behemoth” to the south, but what can Canadians to do protect ourselves from a Macain presidency?
Wow… is what i have to say after watching Sara Palins Video. As much as i admire her that she is so strong in her faith being jewish and religious myself i have to say i’ve never seen a governer, presdent or candidate so afected by their faith. During her speech she was able to show herself as a loving and caring mother who cares deeply about her children and is so proud of them. I find this is an advantage to her since many mothers think alot like her and take a liking for her. She also points out many people in the crowd and speeks to them directly making those people and others feel good about themselves. People like it when they are noticed in a crowd of people by an important person. i know it makes me feel good. She even tells the crowd “I see alot of creativity in all of you” showing her audience that they are important to her. After watching the entire clip i realized how important her faith was to her the question is will she apply her faith as much in her work? I find it is good that she has faith although i am a bit skepticle of how that will affect her and the USA. One more thing i would like to say about Sara Palin is that i didn’t even know where she came from, i feel like she came out of nowhere and at a time where Obama was leading. Now here comes this beautiful, religious and convincing woman running for vice president. will it be enough to help Mccain and herself win?? Dont know we’ll have to wait and see…
I’ve been turtling the whole American political discourse the same way I wrote off all the OJ Simpson stuff as dysfunctional poot and propaganda. However, watching this clip liberated me from my pompous posing as a critical thinker above the “shiny object” fascination of modern American media. I couldn’t stop hunting down Palin clips all over the internet – she’s like watching a car crash – it’s disturbing but you can’t stop staring. My all time favourite quote is when she says something like “I’ll take care of all the governmenty-type stuff and your guys’ job is to help the people of Alaska to get right with god!” OY VEY MARIA!! Well, at least she knows how to delegate. After I heard that, I kept clicking story after story about this twit until my laughter turned to a nervous giggle and finally to sober silence. This shit ain’t funny. This piety pumped reanimated bobble head is likely going to be the Commander-In-Chief of the most powerful army on Planet Earth! I might blow the dust off my own Bible in that instance, or at least stock up on Chapstick so I can kiss my you-know-what goodbye. What if the big G tells her to do something a little less sane than building an Ark or a thirty billion dollar natural gas pipeline? What if she stops looking for Russians loitering the streets of Juno and decides that she’d like to shorten the drive between Anchorage and Utah by annexing Canada? I know it’s not fair for me to call someone on their ignorance when I’m striving to be a compassionate educator but this lady aspires to be a Head of State, folks. This is Kagemusha on steroids. The only difference here is the actor is not a look-alike for a deceased leader, the actor is all you get. Has anyone told Sarah Palin what the Vice President of The United States of America is supposed to do for a living?
Guys, I know we have already discussed this topic before on the site and in class, but I have seen a new vid on youtube.
Made me die of laughter. Palin is so stupid!! Here’s another proof!!
(And it seems like there are A LOT of people who agree on the subject matter – Palin should be out!!)
Make sure you carefully listen to the comments made by people…
for instance that she makes G.W. Bush look like an intellectual. HAHAHA

Sorry to confuse anyone, but I’m going to post my response on chapter 45 here because there was no category written for that yet. This week we had to read Chapters 27, 28 and 45. It was about the media in South Asia. I was really interested in chapter 45, so I’m mainly going to blog on that.
Chapter 45 talked about call centers in India. I have found some points in this chapter that strike me as positive ones, and other points that strike me as negative on this topic. Some positive aspects are that in India young people get jobs at call centers and I think this is great because it allows them to practice the English language and help accomodate the needs of their European and North American customers. The reason it assists in the learning of English language for the natives, is because a major part of their clientele is European and North American so it gives them a chance to practice a new language. At the same time, it shows them what it would be like to enjoy a western lifestyle. Another positive aspect is that advertisement for call centers have inceased tremendously from 2000 to 2005. I believe that the advertisements are more of a success today because they are in color which means that they are much nicer, and this is what attracts job-seekers. I think that the media today is becoming more postmodern. This is a good thing because it shows creativity, originality and the transition from then (black and white) to now (colorful). Also, young people are the most attracted to go and work at call centers because the advertisements make it seem like the employees will be working in a fun filled environment with a good pay and a solid position, so advertisements have really shaped up on sucking people into their plan, plus it is always better for the young people to get hired rather than the old. The younger will be there for longer, they are stronger, don’t get as tired as fast and they work quickly. Hooray for the upgrade on advertisements, but some negative aspects are to come like the lack of multiculturalism. I find it funny how call centers were just getting started in India and today you hardly see any Indians working at the call centers. I think that this is a lack of multiculturalism. Why not hire the people who started this? Also, as I mentioned earlier, the advertisements have a way of sucking people into their tricks. The advertisements look so fun, organized and certain of a good pay that so many young people want to go work there for these benefits in particular. I think it sucks that they are going there mainly for the money that the advertisements promise them. I think you should go for a job because you want to and because you have something in common with it, not just for the money. These adds make it seem like the pay is grand but it’s really not. One of my very close friends works at a call center and the pay is good but it’s not that good! It wouldn’t be worth it to go just for the pay (even if they paid you triple the amount of the regular salary), you have to actually like what you do, otherwise there’s no point in boring yourself in something. I really enjoyed this chapter because it taught me a little bit about the Indians and what they had to do in order to be in the call center. I also didn’t know before reading this that the call centers were mainly first around in India. Multiculturalism and new experiences are also very important, and I think it’s very cool that the Indians were able to practice getting in touch with a western lifestyle.
Very interesting post. A little bit confusing, but it still ok Hm?….Mortgage Loan Home Equity Refinance
I become very emotional when it comes to the subject of racism. Maybe because it revolts me to the core that humans can be so hateful towards each other. But as I grew up and got educated I started to understand the psychological rationale behind the malevolence, and the discriminatory acts. As chapter 52 notes, racism is “… a social construct , a human construct…” Everyone inherits there parents genes , but also there ideologies and system of beliefs. If your parents are racist , then there is a chance you will ensue their path. In some cases, the seed of racism just grows from generation to generation until the roots are well established and resist any educated or sensible anti-racist argument. As soon as there is some sort of comparison which denigrates others because they are different then this behavior falls into a racist view. One can compare cultures in a non pejorative manner and seek only the positive and enriching qualities of that culture. Unfortunately not all see cultures in this way. Racism can manifest itself in many forms , from offensive comments to violent acts of crimes. A typical example of racism is the slavery of colored people who have endured so much denigration, debasement and dehumanization for many years that despite the progress in regaining human rights and priviledges , they are still under attack by racist attitudes. Now a days, with the internet, some sites harbour hate discourses and comments. The perpetraters of racism hide behind bogus identidies ( as many do on any forum) and can cowardly defile their hostilities. Technology may have facilitated our ways of communicating, but paradoxically we find ourselves widening the gap of interpersonal relations. We are far from a utopian society where the sanctity of life reigns over any set of values. Sadly we find ourselves battling a debilitating social disease that is virulent and pains the ones whom it affects : the victimized race. Today , the focus is on the Muslim citizens. They have taken many other identifiers such as , Islamics, Arabs, palestiniens. They have been stigmatized by the media as terrorist and associated with violence and bombings. The media and the film industry have trived on portraying these people as villans and unscrupulous killers. The stereotypical image of Arab people are very belittling and unjustifiable. More so, they have been demonized by politicians to create a polarized view( Evil/Good, Devil/Saint) in the psyche of the people. So demonizing the Muslims just inflicts a negative and destructive label upon them and increases the anti-muslum sentiment. Teaching about tolerance and getting the kids to analyse the information from the media and uncover some of the hidden messages or false representations of a targeted group or culture, they will have a better understanding of how hatred towards these groups or culture comes about. Lastly, I invoke a dear defender of human rights Dr. Martin Luther King who’s famous speech brings hope and inspiration : …” I have a dream…that one day man will not be judged by the color of his skin , but by the content of his character…”
