Killing Us Softly. I find that the focus on the primary text of the ads discounts the intelligence of the people consuming these texts. There is no denying that there are sexist ads. Is the direction of this argument that it is advertising that creates inequalities? Is it not the capital behind the ad and the product that should be targeted? There were other little comments that took me off guard such as when she said that men do not have to worry about being raped-at least if they are straight: I’m sure the two million men in the prison population would disagree. Up to 2% of this population are raped by fellow inmates. The critique seems too simple and too focused on a certain reading.
As for Mickey Mouse Monopoly, I found it interesting that children were interviewed and had a variety of different readings-such as the girl who put in the situation of Beauty and Beast’s Belle would not stay with the Beast because of his abuse.
